The big rumor in my neighborhood is that Steven Starr is opening a new restaurant, a fancy pizzeria, in a spot abandoned late spring by a coffee house with a wide swath of outdoor seating area. Not only did we go all summer without that key outdoor people-watching, coffee-drinking, relaxation area, but the absence of this gathering spot left a gaping hole in our community. This morning I noticed things are happening over there.
And my neighbors are eager, breathless, expectant.
Why? Because we trust Steven Starr. We value what he contributes to our city (and now others).
Starr began his career as a rock promoter (think Live Aid) and club owner who transformed himself into a highly innovative restaurateur with hip, creative, delicious, and popular restaurants in Philadelphia, New York, and Atlantic City. He didn't start out that way. His first restaurant, maybe 20 years ago, was short-lived. I remember the first and only time I went there waiting 30 minutes at our table, and no one waited on us. Judging by not only his success but also very different experiences at his restaurants today, I'd say he's learned from his mistakes. He's grown, evolved, and is surrounded by smart advisors.
It's because of that growth and evolution and the very public way we see that manifested that restaurant goers from around the Philadelphia region know to expect good food, creatively prepared and presented, in a mod setting that adds ups to a great experience. Now, we can't wait for the next installment.
Do your corporate sponsors trust you that way? Do they inquire about what else you have on the horizon? Are they anticipatory of the next opportunity to invest their dollars with you?
